Avocado Pita Chritsmas Tree Appetizers

Sharing is caring!

Okay so I’ve been wanting to share this recipe with you guys for a while now because it’s literally been my go-to appetizer for every holiday party this season! These Festive Avocado Pita Christmas Tree Appetizers are not only super cute (like seriously, they look like little Christmas trees!) but they’re also really easy to make and actually healthy, which is a win when everything else on the table is basically butter and sugar.

I first made these for a friend’s holiday potluck last year and everyone kept asking for the recipe. The best part? You probably already have most of these ingredients in your kitchen and the whole thing takes maybe 25 minutes from start to finish, and most of that is just waiting for the pita to toast. Perfect for when you suddenly remember you need to bring something to a party tomorrow (we’ve all been there, right?).

The combination of creamy avocado with the crispy pita and those little cherry tomatoes on top is just chef’s kiss. Plus they’re vegetarian, so everyone can enjoy them. I’ve made these probably five times in the past month and they disappear SO fast every single time.

Ingredients

  • 2 whole wheat pita breads
  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

How to do it

Prepare the Pita Trees: First thing you’ll want to do is cut each pita bread into 8 wedges so you get those triangle shapes that look like tree sections. Then pop them in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes. You want them slightly crisp but not like, rock hard or anything. Keep an eye on them because ovens vary and nobody wants burnt pita!

Make the Mashed Avocado: While your pitas are toasting, grab a medium bowl and scoop out those avocados. Mash them up with a fork until they’re smooth (I like to leave mine a tiny bit chunky but that’s just me). Add in the lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix it all together until everything’s combined. The lemon juice is important here because it keeps the avocado from turning brown, which is always annoying.

Assemble the Pita Trees: Once your pita wedges have cooled down for a few minutes, spread a generous layer of that avocado mixture on each one. Don’t be stingy with it! Then top each wedge with those halved cherry tomatoes. I try to arrange them so they look like little ornaments on a tree, but honestly they’ll look festive no matter how you place them.

Garnish and Serve: Arrange all your pita trees on a serving platter. This is where you can get creative with the presentation if you want!

Enjoy: These are best served right away while the pita is still crispy, but you can also stick them in the refrigerator if you need to make them a bit ahead of time. They’re perfect for holiday gatherings and honestly taste way fancier than the effort you put in.

A couple quick tips – if you want to add some extra kick, a pinch of chili flakes on top is amazing. Or sometimes I drizzle a little balsamic glaze over them and it takes them to another level. And if you’re planning ahead, you can prep all the components separately and just assemble everything right before your guests arrive so the pita stays nice and crisp.

Hope you guys love these as much as I do! Let me know if you try them!
